About Learning Life

Learning Life is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit devoted to strengthening education, democracy and diplomacy by spreading learning in everyday life beyond school walls. In our unequal and divided world, we are building inclusive learning communities in order to widen and deepen participation in democracy and diplomacy.

With this mission in mind, we run three programs:

Our Democracy Learning Community (DLC) in the Washington DC area is devoted to making democracy more fun by developing events, products, services and spaces that entertain as well as nurture learning, networking, collaboration and wider, deeper citizen participation.

The Family Diplomacy Initiative (FDI) connects people worldwide across lines of country, class, race and religion via the internet to share and learn together about families and citizen diplomacy with an eye to developing a corps of trained family diplomats to advocate for a more caring world via media, businesses, nonprofits and governments.

Citizen Diplomacy International (CDI) gathers diplomacy scholars, students, professionals, and volunteers worldwide every three months online via Zoom for 1.5 hours to share news and presentations on CD research and practice, local to global, with an eye to building a vibrant global CD sector for a more participatory, equitable and sustainable world.

Board Members We Seek

Learning Life was established as an independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2021. We are currently recruiting members for both our Board of Advisors, and Board of Directors, though we prefer members to start on our Board of Advisors.

For the Board of Advisors, we seek up to 30 accomplished and connected professionals to advise Learning Life in its work based on their expertise, and connect us to potential individual and organizational partners as appropriate.  We are currently looking for individuals with eight or more years of work experience, connections and/or research-based expertise in one or more of these areas: nonprofit fundraising, finance, strategy, communications, marketing, diplomacy, democracy, and international or informal education, including building learning communities.  BOA members can live anywhere in the world.

For the Board of Directors, we seek accomplished and connected professionals committed to guiding and growing Learning Life.  We welcome all interested candidates, though we are especially interested in finding leaders with at least ten years of experience in fundraising, finance, strategy, communications or marketing, and/or extensive connections in the diplomatic, democracy, or related business (e.g., education, media and communications) sectors.  BOD members must be willing to help meet fundraising goals by giving and/or getting funds.  BOD members do not need to live in the metro Washington DC area, but should live in the USA.

We seek BOA and BOD diversity by gender, race, ethnicity, and occupation.

Board Member Duties

BOD and BOA members serve two-year terms, renewable for up to four consecutive terms given members’ willingness and their fulfillment of board service expectations.

BOA members are expected to:

  1. Attend quarterly BOA meetings via Zoom.  (Too busy for meetings?  Learn about our Advisory Council.)
  2. Advise and help connect Learning Life as needed.
  3. Donate $100 to $1,000 per year to help advance Learning Life’s work.

BOD members are expected to:

  1. Attend BOD quarterly meetings via Zoom.
  2. Lead or assist in BOD work between meetings as needed.
  3. Advise and assist in at least one area of Learning Life’s work (e.g., legal, fundraising, communications, programming, evaluation).
  4. Give and/or get (donate and/or fundraise) $500 to $5,000 per year to help advance Learning Life’s work.
Benefits & Contact Information

BOD and BOA members have the opportunity to deepen their nonprofit leadership experience, make valuable local to global connections, and help build an innovative nonprofit working to advance education, democracy and diplomacy.  All board members receive Learning Life’s monthly e-news, plus invitations to events, and are recognized as Board members with their bio and picture at Learning Life’s People Page

Individuals interested in serving on the BOD or BOA should send their resume to paul@learninglife.info, and indicate 2-3 times in the coming days that they are free to talk with Learning Life’s Founder & Director, Paul Lachelier. Paul will respond to schedule a meeting via Zoom if there appears to be a good fit.
