Stakeholder Spotlight: Marvin Fan
The “Stakeholder Spotlight” is a new occasional series of posts highlighting people who are helping to advance Learning Life’s work. Our first post in this series features Marvin Quanchao Fan, one of Learning Life’s most engaged volunteers and a current family diplomat. For ways you can support Learning Life, click here.
What is your current occupation?
I am teaching Chinese to 3-6 year olds at a Montessori School in Minneapolis, MN.
Please tell us more about you and your family.
We have four members in my family: my mother, father, me and my son, Yuwen. I was married for four years, but recently divorced. My son is three and a half years old, and lives with my mother and father in China due to the pandemic. Hopefully, next year, if the pandemic dies down, he will come to live with me.
How have you been involved with Learning Life?
I was an intern with Learning Life, helping to lead the international Fundays for kids and families in Southeast Washington DC in the first half of 2019. Then I became a mentor with Learning Life’s International Mentoring Program from June 2019 to August 2020. Then I became a family diplomat participating in the Family Diplomacy Initiative’s international dialogues on Facebook and Zoom since they started in early 2020.
What do you like you about Learning Life’s Family Diplomacy Initiative?
I really like the opportunity to learn about authentic cultures in other parts of the world. I have also made good friends through Learning Life, and even though I moved to Minnesota we keep in touch through Facebook.
