COUNTRY QUIZ: CHINA

For several centuries China was a leading civilization, but internal strife, famine and foreign occupation set back the country in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Following the ravages of World War II and a bloody civil war, China emerged as the People’s Republic of China under the Communist leadership of Mao Zedong (also translated as Mao Tse-Tung). In the years following Mao’s death in 1976, the new Communist leader, Deng Xiaoping, moved China’s economy away from closed central planning toward a somewhat freer market with foreign investment, stock markets, private competition and price liberalization. Subsequent rapid economic growth has returned China to the status of a major economic and military power, increasing interest in and concern about China. This quiz offers some basic information about China.
